Home Remedies for Hair Care Using Honey

Honey- An excellent Hair Care Ingredient

There are several health benefits of honey. For the beauty conscious, honey has applications in skin care, weight loss as well as hair care. (Read the articles on home remedies for weight loss using honey and home remedies for weight loss using honey and cinnamon.) Due to its anti-bacterial property as well as high content in essential minerals and vitamins, honey can be put to multiple uses for hair care. Some of them are listed below-

Honey as Hair Conditioner: Put one spoon of organic or natural or Manuka honey in one litre of luke-warm water and mix it well so as to form a homogeneous liquid. Use this liquid to rinse your hair, leave it on for 15 to 30 mins and wash it off. Note that water should be lukewarm and not hot as hot water increases hair loss as well makes the honey toxic by disintegrating it. Honey gives the hair a shiny look due to its moisturizing properties and keeps the scalp clean.

Honey for Dandruff, Itchy Scalp, Seborrhea:Due to the anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant properties of organic honey, it has remarkable success in treating dandruff, seborrhea, and other scalp conditions such as itchy scalp, inflammation, lesions. This has been well established by scientific research  conducted by the Dubai Specialized Medical Centre in which American doctors concluded that honey was found to effectively treat seborrheic dermatitis of scalp and scaling of individuals.

Add two spoons of natural or organic honey and add half a cup luke-warm water and mix them well. Apply this diluted honey to scalp and massage for 2-3 minutes. Leave it one for one hour. In case of extreme infections, leave for two hours. Wash off scalp and hair later on. Doing this every week will prevent relapse of the scalp infections. Thus by improving the scalp condition, honey contributes to the control of hair loss.

Honey for Hair Growth:Mix one tablespoon natural or organic honey or Manuka Honey with one tablespoon of olive oil and one teaspoon cinnamon powder. Apply this mixture on scalp and massage for 2-3 minutes. Leave it on for around 30 minutes and then wash it off. Regular usage will promote good growth of hairs and controls hair loss

Honey for Bald Patches: Rub a piece of onion or apply onion juice on the bald patch on the scalp and massage for 3-5 minutes. Due to increased blood circulation in the area, the bald patch becomes red. Apply a small amount of honey on the area, leave for about 20 minutes and then wash off. One can also use garlic in place of onions.

One can also mix 40 ml of onion juice with one tablespoon of natural or organic honey or Manuka honey and directly apply the mixture on the bald patches. Massage gently for 3-5 minutes and leave for 20 minutes and then wash off. One can see hair growing back only in certain types of bald patches. Nonetheless, if you have a bald patch, it is worth a try and has no harm.

Honey to Rejuvenate Coloured Hairs: Sometimes artificial colours appied on the hair can make hairs rough and dull due the presence of strong chemicals in them. In such cases applying honey to hair can make them shiny, lustrous and give a new life to dull hairs. Simply dip your finger tips in organic or natural honey and gently massage them at the hair roots. Leave for 20 minutes and wash off. Continue this every day. If you have long hairs and do not wash your hair every day, then use this 2-3 times a week.

Honey in Hair Care Products: Honey is also one of the main ingredients in several natural haircare products such as shampoos, hair lotions and hair creams. You can also your own value-added shampoo at home. Just take any natural, mild shampoo. Add olive oil and organic or natural honey to the bottle of shampoo. Use this regularly for washing your hair. This provides natural conditioning to hairs.

Benefits of Manuka Honey

UMF Manuka Honey - A Superfood

What is Manuka Honey?

Manuka Honey is a special type of honey originally found in New Zealand. It has recently become extremely famous and is being touted as a superfood because of its additional healing power. Unlike ordinary honey, Manuka honey is made from the nectar of only one type of flower – flowers of Manuka bush which is found in New Zealand. This is how Manuka Honey gets its name.

Manuka Honey became popular when there was an outbreak of MRSA infections which showed resistant to all conventional anti-biotics used to treat infections. MRSA infections which are life threatening in nature and can be extremely painful were successfully treated by UMF Manuka Honey.

Are all Manuka Honey considered superfoods?

There are two types of Manuka Honey:

Ordinary Manuka Honey: This is like any other table honey. It owes its antibacterial properties to the presence of Hydrogen Peroxide in it. Ordinary Manuka honey benefits are same as those of as those of other honey varieties. Read about health benefits of honey.

UMF Manuka Honey: Some varieties of Manuka Honey contain additional ingredients which are responsible for its high potency and extreme healing power. The presence of this special ingredient is known as ‘Unique Manuka Factor’ or simply ‘UMF’. The extent of presence of this special ingredient is denoted by the UMF label and a number which indicates the strength of its anti-bacterial property e.g. UMF 10, UMF 16, UMF 20, etc.

Which Manuka Honey should you buy?

If you are buying Manuka Honey for its unique therapeutic properties, make sure you buy the right product.   Only ten percent of all Manuka Honey available in the market is supposed to have the special healing power for which it is so famous. Only when the Manuka Honey contains a threshold level of anti-bacterial activity, will it be permitted to use the ‘UMF’ mark, which is now a registered trademark. So look for the UMF label on the jar before you end up buying ordinary Manuka honey at premium prices. Also, make sure the UMF rating mentioned on the label is more than 10, which would appear as ‘UMF 10’ on the label. Genuine UMF Manuka Honey would have been packaged in New Zealand and now where else. So beware of someone trying to sell you UMF Manuka Honey which is made in your local country.

What are additional health benefits of Manuka Honey over ordinary honey?

As such ordinary honey is a powerful food supplement and there are several health benefits of honey. (Read the articles on home remedies for weight loss using honey and home remedies for weight loss using honey and cinnamon.) The anti-bacterial property of honey which makes it an ingredient of many home remedies is due to the presence of hydrogen peroxide in it. In addition of hydrogen peroxide, Manuka honey contains additional anti-bacterial properties commonly known as the ‘Unique Manuka Factor (UMF)’. The factor raises the potency of honey to such an extent that no bacteria has been found to exhibit resistance to Manuka Honey, making it the most effective anti-bacterial ingredient known till date. Experts have said that Manuka Honey when applied to an infection creates a waterless micro-environment in the area due to the presence of high sugar content. This waterless environment does not allow bacteria to multiply or even survive.

Is there scientific evidence to prove health benefits of Manuka Honey?

Several research studies have been conducted by independent research agencies which prove the efficacy of UMF Manuka Honey. The first of such studies was conducted by the Dr. Peter Molan, Honey Research Unit, University of Waikato  who conducted extensive research on the special healing properties of UMF Manuka Honey.  Another piece of important research was done by German researcher Professor Thomas Henle, Head of the Institute of Food Chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden, who concluded that it is methylglyoxal or MGO which is responsible for anti-bacterial properties of UMF Manuka Honey.

Methylglyoxal or MGO can be found in ordinary honey as well, however the concentration is much lower, in the range 1-10 mg per Kg. UMF Manuka Honey on the other hand can contain MGO between 100 to 1000 mg per Kg. It is this higher concentration of methylglyoxal that raises its germ fighting abilities. When buying UMF Manuka Honey for its therapeutic properties, always buy a product with MGO level greater than 400 mg per Kg.

Home Remedies for Weight Loss Using Honey And Cinnamon

Weight Loss using Honey and Cinnamon

A weight loss program using honey and cinnamon combination is probably the most effective natural way to lose weight. One just needs to have some patience and be regular with the regimen. Here are the steps involved:

  • Bring one cup of water to boil and take it off the heater.
  • Put 1 spoon cinnamon powder in the water, cover it and leave it for 30 mins
  • After 30 mins are over, filter it using a fine cloth to sieve out undissolved cinnamon particles
  • Now that the water would have become cold or luke-warm, add 2 spoon of honey into it.
  • Drink half of this concoction in the empty stomach as early as possible in the morning. Have your breakfast at least one hour after this drink.
  • Store the remaining half at room temperature and drink it at bedtime before sleeping, at least two hours after dinner.

Make sure that the stomach is empty or light when you drink it. For this, you may have to do your dinner early so that your stomach is light by the time you go to bed.

There is no need to add anything else to it such as lemon or vinegar, etc. Also two times a day is enough. This is highly effective in flushing out accumulated toxins from the intestines. Due to release of toxins, one may experience rashes on skin, which is normal. In case of Diarrhea, reduce the intake to once a day and when diarrhea subsides, it can be increased to the original twice a day dosage.

The results are quite impressive from this technique, not just from weight loss point of view, but from detoxification benefits as well.

Home Remedies For Weight Loss Using Honey

Weight Loss Using Honey

Due to health benefits of honey, it has been traditionally used in various home remedies for uplifting the beauty of the body. One of such home remedies is the losing weight using honey. People tend to put on weight when the metabolism rate is not enough to completely burn up their food intake. As a result fat starts accumulating in various organs of the body and tissues, and leads to obesity as well as increase in cholesterol levels. Most refined sweeteners such as white sugar aggravate this situation by drawing upon body’s repository of nutrients to get metabolised themselves. This leaves fewer nutrients available for the metabolism of fat and cholesterol. Honey, unlike refined sugar, itself contains several essential nutrients required for proper metabolism. Thus by improving the metabolism of the body, honey prevents and also cures obesity.

People often doubt about the weight-reduction property of honey by debating that it is a sugar and hence should add to the weight. But like we explained above, the difference lies in honey (even jaggery, candy sugar) being a natural sweetener rather than a refined sweetener such as white sugar and asparatme. Honey in its natural form contains several essential elements required for proper metabolism that refined sugar is completely devoid.

Home Remedies for Weight Loss Using Honey

Home Remedy 1: Add a spoon of honey to a glass of lukewarm water (not hot) and drink it empty-stomached , first thing in the morning after you get up from bed.  Several users have reported remarkable benefits using this simple yet powerful home remedy for weight loss. Make sure not to use cold water in place of lukewarm water or the results can be opposite.

Home Remedy 2 :  According to the theory of Hibernation Diet (insert amazon banner), taking one or two spoons of honey just before going to bed at night, helps in weight loss, promotes good sleep and also tones up the liver.

Home Remedy 3: Weight loss using Honey and Cinnamon combination. Read this highly effective home remedy for weight loss here.

Although all the above home remedies are time-tested, they will be effective only if you make some necessary lifestyle changes required for weight loss. Regular exercising, cutting down intake of processed food such as cheese, refined sugars, alcohol and refined flour will go a great way in weight loss.

Finally, many people resort to starve themselves in a desperate bid to lose weight. But remember that such practices only make your immune system weak internally and thus vulnerable to more diseases. It is important to healthy and nutritious food irrespective of your weight. Discipline in what you eat, how much you eat and when you eat along with regular exercise and little bit of patience will definitely succeed.

Acidity from excessive honey intake can be treated by eating tender cilantro (coriander) and pomegranates.

HOW TO TEST PURITY OF HONEY: Some manufacturers synthesise artificial honey in factories or laboratories. This is done by storing sugar syrup in large containers and keeping them underground. After subjecting them to high pressure for a period of six months, artificial honey is ready which can pass all the commonly- performed purity tests. We will talk about how to test the purity of honey.

  1. A drop of pure honey when put in a glass of water, it will settle at the bottom and would not dissolve with time. But artificial honey which is a different form of sugar will quickly dissolve since it is adulterated with jaggery or sugar.
  2. A cotton wick dipped in honey when burnt, burns cleanly without any noise. But artificial honey will make noise while burning
  3. Few drops of pure honey when poured on a blotting paper should not get absorbed. If it is absorbed, honey is adulterated.
  4. Few drops of pure honey when poured on a white cloth would not leave any stains when washed. If stain remains on the cloth, honey is adulterated
  5. Another simple but effective test is when you pour honey from one container to another. Unadulterated honey will spin clock-wise as you pour it; this has to do with the unsymmetrical structure of honey molecules.
  6. Dogs do not consume honey or eatables with honey in them. Try feeding a slice of bread dipped in honey to a dog. If the dog eats the bread, your honey is not pure. If it does not eat it, your honey is pure. A dog is surely a man’s best friend!!
